Words to live by

I recently dropped off my daughter at college. I left her in her newly decorated dorm room filled with excitement mixed with a little bit of trepidation about what the next four years would bring. As I launched her off into the world I wanted to leave her with some poetic words of advice.

Here are two great examples of what I think are the best tips on how to live a full, healthy well balanced life. Let me know what you think!

Dance With the Girl You Came With

My bike. She’s not young, in fact she’s old. By many cyclists in the know standards she’s probably years BEYOND being put on a shelf, or passed down to a kid just starting to ride, or used as “fix it” parts. But I love her. I love her just the way she is, with her peeling paint and  war wounds where we have unfortunately got a little too cozy with the pavement.

Don't Wait

there are times where you will find yourself with an opportunity to test yourself where the preparation, for whatever reason, was either not optimal or not done at all. Hmmmmm. This poses a problem. Do you face the challenge head on, throw your best effort you are capable of in that moment at it and hope for the best? Or do you give yourself a hall pass and look to the future to see what you’ve got when you have done the all important prep work?

Stress Busters for a Happy Mind and a Healthy Heart

Stress Busters for a Happy Mind and a Healthy Heart

Each of us have stress in our busy lives.  We all handle said stress in our own way and feel it at varying levels. Given that we will have strain in our days, and that most of us strive to maintain a level of calm, I thought it would be useful to all of us to learn some time tested ways (from the Food Matters website)  to minimize the impact on our nervous systems.

The HEART of the matter

Since it is Valentine’s day, and February is heart health month, I thought it fitting to do a few posts on different ways we can take care of our hearts. Both physically and emotionally. I will share some ideas that have worked for me as well as some scientific based truths. I would also love to hear some ways you go about striving to live with a happy heart.

To kick off the mini series, I would like to start with what I feel is the most important link to having a happy and healthy heart. Self love.

You are your best and most valuable asset. Regardless of how many people depend on you, putting your life vest on first is the best way to ensure that you are healthy, happy and emotionally strong enough to support others.

Nourishing yourself with wholesome foods, seeking to grow and push yourself a little outside your comfort zone, and allowing yourself time to check out, decompress, and just take a rest, will create the balance you need to….you guessed it THRIVE!

While many think that romantic love is the most important component to our emotional happiness, love for the self provides a base from which all else flows. This sense of fulfillment and nourishment are vital to our overall sense of peace.

When you start from a foundation of self respect and acceptance, you become a powerful positive force to all those around you. You radiate an inner peace and confidence that people can admire and emulate, creating a ripple effect in your world.

How do we establish and grow our love for the person in the mirror?

Here are a few quick ideas and suggestions to maintain your balance, and see yourself as the beautiful, strong, work of art that you were meant to be. I will be elaborating on these individually in the posts this coming week:

Fuel your body with nourishing food

Surround yourself with positive cheerleaders of your best self

           Embrace some form of spirituality

           Learn something new

Share your passions

Create Goals (one of my all time favorites)

Sleep

Make time for fun

Let it go

So on this day where we are celebrating those we love, make sure that you are on the top of that list.

THRIVE ON!
